...Cloris Leachman was unhappy with her role of farm wife and decided to leave the series; CBS was afraid audiences would think Paul Martin got a divorce, a no-no on television until well into the 1970s. So instead, Paul and Ruth Martin were recast, and Hugh Reilly and June Lockhart took over the roles for the next six years. Uncle Petrie, played by George Chandler, had joined the series when the Martins bought the farm, but stayed only through fifth season. |
